We’ve identified local museums and nonprofit/advocacy organizations that would be compatible with the goals of the MA in American Studies Program. Acklyn Lynch is a Philosopher and Political Economist, and a retired professor emeritus and chairperson of Africana Studies at University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Publication:  Nightmare Overhanging Darkly: Essays on Black Culture and Resistance

Lynch will discuss the advances of science and technology as it relates to global communication systems at political, corporate, and consumer levels.  He will focus on the impact that these systems have on American society as it relates to education and consumption as well as the social-psychological impact of this technology on popular culture in the present day African Diaspora world.

Gavin Wright is the William Robertson Coe Professor of American Economic History at Stanford University.  He is the author many books and articles on US and southern economic history, including Old South, New South: Revolutions in the Southern Economy Since the Civil War (Louisiana State University Press, 1997) and Slavery and American Economic Development (LSU Press, 2006).

The Business, Culture, and Society program explores the cultural foundations of enterprise, commerce, and work.  Each year, the series offers programs focused on a specific theme. The theme for 2009-2010 is “The Global Consumer.”

Student GRA Application - Spring 2010

Hola MAST students!

We hope you will consider applying for a MAST graduate research assistantship!  We have one (1) available for Spring 2010.  This is a single-semester position that provides a $2000 stipend and tuition remission. A MAST GRA works with one or more faculty members on projects related to the faculty member’s research, public scholarship, university or professional service, or teaching.

GRA Faculty Project Application for Spring 2010

MAST has ONE GRA position available for a faculty project and student for Spring 2009.  We will follow the same project and assistant selection procedures we followed for the Fall 2009 competition.

MAST program faculty members with provisional or full graduate faculty status who have projects suitable for GRA work shall submit a written proposal according to the attached guidelines.  The deadline for proposals is 5:00 p.m., October 1, 2009.

Faculty projects will be chosen by the MAST GRA Project committee.  (Student applicants for the GRA position will be reviewed and selected by the Admissions/GRA Committee)

The M.A. in AS program announces a Spring 2010 admission cycle for the program.  All application materials are due in the Graduate Admissions office by November 1, 2009.

The Masters of Arts in American Studies –– drawing from disciplines that include history‚ sociology‚ foreign languages‚ communications‚ business‚ literature and art –– is designed to attract professionals working in local cultural sites such as museums‚ national parks and public history venues and in non−profit and corporate organizations whose programs reach diverse audiences in the U.S. and abroad. The degree also targets high school teachers who want to focus their graduate studies in the humanities rather than on pedagogy‚ as well as students from abroad interested in studying American culture.
